Independent Admission Guide · Not affiliated with any Sainik School

Ernakulam is an exam centre, not a Sainik School — here's how admission actually works.

This free, independent guide explains how Ernakulam and Kochi families can apply to Sainik Schools nationwide through AISSEE, including two genuine Sainik Schools within Kerala itself.

Ernakulam is a Sainik School Entrance Exam centre — not the site of a Sainik School.

Ernakulam is one of five official AISSEE exam centre cities within Kerala (alongside Kazhakootam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, and Palakkad), where students can sit the entrance test. That is different from having a Sainik School located there. Kerala does have two genuine, verifiable Sainik Schools — Sainik School Kazhakootam and the newer Vidyadhiraja Vidyapeetom Sainik School at Mavelikara — plus every other Sainik School in India remains open to Kerala applicants under the all-India quota. This page explains exactly how that works.

AISSEE is a written, classroom-based entrance exam — the same format at every centre nationwide, including Ernakulam.

What is AISSEE?

One national exam, sat locally, admits anywhere in India.

The All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE) is the single entrance test used by every Sainik School in the country — both the 33 original, fully government-run schools and the newer Sainik Schools set up under the Ministry of Defence's partnership (PPP) initiative, including Kerala's own Vidyadhiraja Vidyapeetom Sainik School. It is conducted once a year by the National Testing Agency for admission to Class VI and Class IX. An Ernakulam-based student sits the exam at the Ernakulam centre and, on the strength of their AISSEE result, can be offered a seat at any participating Sainik School nationwide — including, but not limited to, Kerala's own schools.

How to Apply

Five steps, from the Ernakulam exam centre onward

The application process is the same nationwide — an Ernakulam-based family follows exactly these steps.

01Online

Register for AISSEE

Applications typically open in the winter months on the National Testing Agency's AISSEE portal, fully online regardless of where you live.

02Choose

List Your Preferred Schools

During registration, applicants list Sainik Schools in order of preference. A Kerala family might list Kazhakootam or Mavelikara first, without being restricted to Kerala.

03Sit

Write the Exam at the Ernakulam Centre

Ernakulam is one of Kerala's five official AISSEE exam centres, so most Kochi-area students can sit the exam without travelling far.

04Clear

Medical Examination

Shortlisted candidates, based on merit and their listed preferences, undergo a medical fitness check at an empanelled hospital before final selection.

05Join

Merit List & Admission

Final offers are made by merit, category, and preference order. The academic session at most Sainik Schools begins in April.

Real Options

Sainik Schools genuinely open to Ernakulam applicants

Two of these are located within Kerala itself. The rest are established, verifiable Sainik Schools in nearby states, all accepting applicants from anywhere in India through the all-India AISSEE quota. This is informational — none of these schools are affiliated with this guide.

Fees & Scholarships

What a Sainik School education actually costs

Annual fees at Sainik Schools nationwide are set by each school's own Board of Governors within norms laid down by the Sainik Schools Society, and typically cover tuition, boarding, mess and clothing charges. Concessions exist for defence dependents and economically weaker sections, and the New Sainik School (PPP) initiative — which includes Kerala's Mavelikara school — offers government fee support of up to 50% for eligible families, subject to an upper limit. Because fees vary by school and change year to year, always confirm the current figure directly with the school you plan to apply to.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Sainik School in Ernakulam?+
No. Ernakulam is one of Kerala's five official AISSEE exam centres, where students sit the entrance test — it is not the location of any Sainik School. Kerala's two real Sainik Schools are located at Kazhakootam (Thiruvananthapuram) and Mavelikara (Alappuzha district).
Does sitting the exam in Ernakulam limit which school I can join?+
No. The exam centre only affects where you physically write the paper. Your final school allocation depends on your AISSEE merit rank, category, and the school preferences you list during registration — not on where you sat the exam.
Can Ernakulam students apply to Sainik Schools outside Kerala?+
Yes. AISSEE and the resulting admission are national in scope. A Kerala-based student can list any participating Sainik School nationwide as a preference, not only the two within the state.
Is this website an official Sainik School?+
No. This is an independent, informational guide for families researching Sainik School admission from Ernakulam and Kochi. It is not affiliated with the Sainik Schools Society, the Ministry of Defence, or any individual Sainik School. For official information, always verify directly with the Sainik Schools Society or the specific school you are applying to.
Where can I find official AISSEE dates and the information bulletin?+
The Sainik Schools Society publishes the official Information Bulletin and exam dates each year on its own portal. Always cross-check dates, fees and eligibility there before applying, since details can change year to year.
